FIFA World Cup 2026 results roundup: Brazil, Morocco reach round of 32, South Africa stun South Korea
World Cup 2026 results: Three groups, six games. FIFA World Cup saw the first of its groups wrapped up with a few round of 32 berths confirmed. There was plenty of drama as co-hosts Canada were in action while South Africa and South Korea battled it out for a chance to progress. Brazil also played Scotland while Mexico looked to keep their 100% record intact.
Group A: Mexico keep winning and South Africa make history
Mexico maintained their perfect start to the World Cup by convincingly beating Czechia in their final Group A game. With their top spot in the group confirmed, the co-hosts made a handful of changes to their playing XI. This gave Czechia hope and they did start brightly but failed to create clear chances.
In the second half, El Tri looked more like the team that has won their opening two games. Mateo Chavez put them ahead in the 55th minute after some Luis Romo jiggled past three of his opponents. They just had to wait six minutes to double their lead as Julian Quinones scored from teenage Gilberto Mora’s pass.
The closing moments saw Mexico score a third after Roberto Alvarado pounced on Santiago Gimenez’s parried effort in stoppage time. They will now face one of the eight best third-placed teams on July 1.
The other game in the group saw South Korea take on South Africa. The Asian side were in pole position to qualify, needing only a point to go through. The Taegeuk Warriors looked better in the early exchanges but failed to create cut chances. Their opponents were content to hit on the counter but the game was bereft on any quality.
With the game prodding along Thapelo Maseko put Bafana Bafana ahead in the 63rd minute. He took a low cross and control the ball before finishing through the legs of Jens Castrop. South Korea huffed and puffed but couldn’t force opposing goalkeeper Ronwen Williams into much action. With this result, South Africa progressed to the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time, while South Korea now have to hope they go get through as one of the best third-placed teams.
Group B: Canada lose but go through, Bosnia-Herzegovina boost qualification hopes
Canada lost to Switzerland in their Group B match but still qualified for the round of 32. Both teams entered the BC Place level on points, knowing a win for either side would take them top of the group. Understandbly then, the first half saw a few chances with teams approaching the match with caution.
But this wasn’t the case in the next 45 minutes. Thw Swiss came out of the blocks and went ahead after just a minute. Ruben Vargas received a cross from Johan Manzambi and finished comfortably past Maxime Crepeau. The Canadian goalkeeper was at fault as the European side doubled their lead in the 57th minute. Manzambi shot straight at Crepeau but the ball squirmed past the shot stopper and into the net.
The co-hosts did find a a way back after Promise David havled the deficit in the 76th minute but Murat Yakin’s team held on to top Group B. While Canada do reach the round of 32, Jesse Marsch’s side have given up home field advantage and will now face South Africa in California on June 28.
The group also saw Qatar take on Bosnia-Herzegovina with the third place at stake. Bosnia started impressively as they tested opposition goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada from the distance. It was another long range effort that gave them the lead in the 29th minute as Kerim Alajbegovic struck a powerful shot past Abunada. The Zmajevi were not letting up and Edin Dzeko saw his effort struck Sultan Al Brake and beat the keeper to make it 2-0 in the 34th minute.
But three minutes from half time, Qatar pulled a goal back after Hassan Al Haydos bundled home a cross from Edmilson Jr. The Maroons went close to an equalizer but couldn’t finish off. Then in the 80th minute, Bosnia’s Ermin Mahmic slotted the third goal for his team after a loose ball from a corner in the Qatar box. This result eliminates the Asian champions while Bosnia, with four points to their name, are in a good position to reach the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time ever.
Group C: Brazil seal top spot as Morocco and Haiti play out thriller
Brazil secured the top spot in Group C after a 3-0 win over Scotland. The match appeared to be an even contest with the Scots playing with more intent than in their previous game. But they were the architects of their own downfall. Just seven minutes in, defender Scott McKenna stalled on the ball and it allowed teenager Rayan to take the ball and set up Vinicius Jr for the first goal of the game.
Jack Hendry then made the same mistake with Vinicius again scoring but this time Scotland were given a reprieve as VAR ruled out the goal for a foul on the defender. Steve Clarke’s team failed to learn their lessons as more lethargic defending allowed Vinicius to head home from a cross in first half stoppage time.
While Scotland improved in the second half, Carlo Ancelloti’s men put the game to bed at the hour mark with Matheus Cunha smashing home from a Bruno Guimaraes pass for the third goal. The win ensured Seleção head into round of 32 in the top spot while Scotland’s World Cup hopes hang by a thread,
In the other Group C encounter, Morocco and Haiti played out one of the best games of the tournament. The African side were expected to dominate but were stunned by their less fancied opponents in the 10th minute. Lenny Joseph saw his cheeky back heel attempt went in off Yassine Bounou to give Haiti a shock lead.
The Atlas Lions improvd and Achraf Hakimi pulled them level in the 39th minute, scoring from close range after Bilal El Khannouss’ deflected shot was only parried by Johny Placide. But there was more drama to come.
Haiti went ahead again in the 43rd minute after Wilson Isidor scored a stunner from 25 yards out. But Morocco still had time to draw level in the stoppage time of the first half following Ismael Saibari finish from Hakimi’s cut back.
The match remained in the balance until the 78th minute when Soufiane Rahimi’s shot deflected off Haiti defender Ricardo Ade and beat goalkeeper Placide to give Morocco the lead. Mohamed Ouahbi’s men then sealed the win when Gessime Yassine scored in the 89th minute. The result means Morocco finish in second place in Group C and advance while Haiti bow out.
