World Cup 2026 results: Portugal looked for their first win when they played Uzbekistan and Colombia took on DR Congo in Group K. England faced Ghana and Croatia were up against Panama in Group L.
Portugal 5-0 Uzbekistan
Cristiano Ronaldo finally arrived at the World Cup party with a brace against Uzbekistan to help Portugal to a first win at the World Cup. After the first round of matches, he had seen his rivals Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, and Kylian Mbappe score while he was left frustrated after a draw against DR Congo.
The pressure on him mounted ahead of the game with the above mentioned trio scoring two goals each in their second games. With scrutiny and criticism around him mounting, he delivered a performance showing he still has a lot more to give. It took him just six minutes to get his name on the scoresheet after he placed a low volley from Joao Cancelo’s cross to put his side 1-0 up. This made The 41-year-old the first player in six World Cups. Roberto Martinez’s side doubled their lead when Nuno Mendes riffled in from a low free-kick in the 17th minute.
Uzbekistan then saw a stunning goal from Aziz G’aniev ruled out for a foul by Abbosbek Fayzullaev on Cancelo. Ronaldo then got his second of the game after calmly slotting past Abduvohid Nematov in the 39th minute from a Bruno Fernandes through ball.
The second half saw Portugal tighten the screws with Ronaldo having a couple of chances to complete his hat trick. At the hour mark, a fourth goal arrived when Nematov saw the ball go into his net after a scramble from a corner. Rafael Leao then capped the win for his team with a wonderful strike into the left corner.
Portugal will now face Colombia on June 28 in a game that will determine the Group K leader, and Uzbekistan round off their debut World Cup campaign against DR Congo.
England 0-0 Ghana
England were held to a tepid draw by Ghana, who were good value for their point in Boston. Having run over Croatia in the opening game, Thomas Tuchel’s men arrived for their second game, brimming with confidence. A bright start, however, soon gave way to a frustrating performance as they failed to break the deadlock.
The Three Lions were expected to have more possession and control the game, which they did, but without testing Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare. The closest they went in the second half was when Declan Rice saw his free-kick go over the crossbar inside 15 minutes. It took England 57 minutes to register their first shot on target.
Substitute Bukayo Saka saw his header go just over the bar, and Asare saved a Harry Kane strike from the edge of the box. It wasn’t all one-way traffic, though, as the Black Stars threatened on the counter-attack. Prince Adu saw his effort thwarted by a last-ditch Ezri Konsa challenge. In the closing stages, England remained on top with Asare saving Saka’s curling effort, and then Nico O’Reilly saw his header hit the bar. Defender Marc Guehi also had his effort cleared off the line.
Overall, the lack of a cutting edge means England have more to do when it comes to establishing themselves as a serious contender, while Ghana will be confident of a positive result when they face Croatia next Saturday.
Colombia 1-0 DR Congo
Colombia confirmed their place in the Round of 32 after a 1-0 win over DR Congo in Guadalajara. Just like they did in their first game, Colombia made a quick start and saw Daniel Munoz and Jhon Arias go close to putting them ahead in the first half.
The South American side remained a constant threat and would consider themselves unlucky that they didn’t score at least one goal in the opening 45 minutes. DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi kept his side in the game for long periods, saving from Luiz Diaz, James Rodriguez, and Gustavo Puerta.
When Diaz was again denied by Mpasi’s brilliant block, it appeared Los Cafeteros would struggle to break down the African side. But the moment their expectant fans waited for arrived in the 76th minute. Fernando Quintero slid the ball into the box, and Jhon Cordoba failed to get a touch on it, but Munoz, who had been a threat throughout the game, struck from his left foot and beat Mpasi. This was the Crystal Palace defender’s second goal in the tournament, and he is fast emerging as a big player for his side.
DR Congo would be a little disappointed that they couldn’t offer more in attack, having impressed in the draw against Portugal in the opening game. Still, they have the chance to progress to the knockout stage when they take on Uzbekistan in their final group game on June 28.
Croatia 1-0 Panama
Croatia overcame Panama to register their first win at the 2026 World Cup and remained on track for qualification to the next round. The clash in Toronto pitted seasoned campaigners against the CONCACAF side, but it was Panama who looked lively in the opening exchanges.
Their pace troubled Croatia in the first half, with Dominik Livakovic tipping Jose Luis Rodriguez’s header onto the crossbar. The 2018 World Cup runners-up had to wait until first-half stoppage time to get a shot on target. Zlatko Dalic then brought on Ante Budimir and Andrej Kramaric in the second half, and his side looked much better going forward.
Budimir then rewarded his coach’s faith as he poked in Josip Stanisic’s cross at the far post to give his side the lead. Luka Modric then sent Marco Pasalic through with an aerial ball, but his chip was blocked by Panama goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera. The game remained on the edge, and Croatia didn’t appear comfortable with their one-nil advantage.
Amir Murillo was twice denied by Livakovic, and the goalkeeper then just managed to tip over Carlos Harvey’s header as the Vatreni held on to secure three points and eliminate Panama.
Croatia will still have a job to do when they face Ghana on June 27, and Panama will finish their World Cup run against England on the same day in Group L.
