Mexico began their World Cup campaign in impressive fashion after beating South Africa 2-0 in the opening game of Group A. The hosts were cheered on by a frentic support at the Estadio Azteca, which was awash with color and noise.
The game started quite open with Mexico dominating the early exchanges. Then with just under 10 minutes on the clock Julian Quinones sent a shot through the legs of South African keeper Ronwen Williams. The 2025 Gold Cup winners did go close to doubling their lead before half-time as well.
The second half began with Bafana Bafana’s Yaya Sithole being sent off for bringing down Brian Gutierrez as he was through on goal. Then an emotional moment captured attention as Raul Jimenez headed in a second goal for his side in the 67th minute. The ex-Fulham striker was close to tears after scoring.
Six years ago, he suffered a skull fracture after a clash of heads with David Luiz during a Premier League game. He was unconscious on the pitch with many fearing the worst. Since then, he has been back playing football and the goal in the opening was a poignant moment.
South Africa were then reduced to nine men with Themba Zwane shown a red card for slapping Roberto Alvarado. Mexico also saw a late red card for Cesar Montes after he fouled Khuliso Mudau in the closing stages of the match.
Mexico have the perfect start to the World Cup with three valuable points on the board. South Africa, meanwhile, will have to improve a lot in what will be a tightly fought group.
What’s Next?
El Tri will have a bigger challenge as they face fellow opening day victors South Korea on June 19 while South Africa take on Czechia a day before hoping to get on the points board.
