FIFA World Cup 2026: Mexico vs South Africa, Predicted Lineups and Match Prediction
Think FIFA World Cup 2010. Think Siphiwe Tshabalala’s iconic goal and Peter Drury’s commentary that followed. These were the memories that flooded the minds of the fans after the 2026 World Cup draw pitted the two nations again in the opening game of the tournament.
Both teams will enter the iconic Estadio Azteca with expectations and hopes of a strong start. With an expanded World Cup, the two opponents on June 11 will eye progress to the knockout stages but the opening match could set the tone for what is to come next.
Group A will also include Asian heavyweights South Korea and Europe’s Czechia and qualification from the group could come down to fine margins, making the first match all the more important.
Mexico vs. South Africa history
16 years ago, Mexico and South Africa kicked off proceedings in the first ever World Cup hosted by an African nation. The 1-1 draw has lived long in the memory of fans and in a poetic twist of fate they will meet again in the opening game but this time it is the North American nation that will host the match.
They have met each other on three other occasions. The first meeting was an international friendly in 1993 where El Tri won 3-0. This was followed by an encounter seven years later at the US Nike Cup with Mexico again prevailing with a 4-2 win.
A third match between the two teams took place at the CONCACAF Gold Cup where Bafana Bafana beat Mexico 2-1.
Mexico vs. South Africa – Predicted lineups
Mexico predicted lineup.
Formation: 4-3-3
Goalkeeper: Raúl Rangel
Defenders: Jorge Sánchez, Johan Vásquez, César Montes, and Jesús Gallardo
Midfielders: Álvaro Fidalgo, Erik Lira, and Brian Gutiérrez
Forwards: Roberto Alvarado, Julián Quiñones, and Raúl Jiménez
South Africa predicted lineup.
Formation:
Goalkeeper: Ronwen Williams
Defenders: Aubrey Modiba, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Ime Okon, Khuliso Mudau
Midfielders: Teboho Mokoena, Sphephelo Sithole, Jayden Adams
Forwards: Tshepang Moremi, Lyle Foster, Oswin Appollis
Players to watch:
Mexico:
Raúl Jiménez will always carry a threat for his side in the final third. He is the type of player that can score from any range and position and will be a handful. A man for the big occasion, his goal did help El Tri win the Gold Cup final against USA last year.
South Africa:
Though South Africa have prolific talent available in the team, Oswin Appollis is the baller to watch out for. His pace and readiness to take on defenses will hold his side in good stead. The opening match of a World Cup is exactly the stage where such talent can thrive. Appollis is capable to rekindle memories of Tshabalala’s iconic goal from 2010.
Mexico vs. South Africa match prediction
Mexico know one thing before entering this match, they cannot afford sliping up on day one. The crowd at the Azteca will drive them forward but a defeat would turn that support into a cauldron of pressure for the remaining games.
Javier Aguirre has a team that can be swift in attack and punish any mistakes from their African opponents. Bafana Bafana will be wary of the threat they have to deal with. The key would be how long they can keep the Mexican attack quiet as the Azteca will play its part.
My prediction is that Mexico have enough firepower to just edge South Africa on the opening day.
Prediction: Mexico 2-1 South Africa
