FIFA World Cup 2026 results roundup Day 9: USA reach knockouts, Turkey out, wins for Brazil and Morocco
World Cup 2026 results: Co-hosts USA played Australia and Paraguay took on Turkey in Group D. In Group C, Morocco faced Scotland, and five-time champions Brazil went up against Haiti.
USA 2-0 Australia
USA became the second co-host after Mexico to confirm their place in the Round of 32 after a comprehensive win against Australia in Seattle. Backed by a noisy support at Lumen Field, Mauricio Pochettino’s side made an energetic start in the Group D clash.
Despite missing Christian Pulisic from the matchday, they put Australia under pressure early on and went ahead thanks to an own goal from Cameron Burgess after Folarin Balogun squared the ball across the goal.
The Socceroos tried to respond and saw Mathew Leckie’s shoot go just over the crossbar. USA continued their high-intensity press, not giving their opponents much time to breathe. Then two minutes from half-time they doubled their lead.
Sergino Dest saw his shot blocked, but the ball went up, and Alex Freeman headed it in. The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but after a VAR check, The Stars and Stripes saw their lead grow. After the break, Australia looked a little more lively following the introduction of Nestory Irankunda. But it was all too little too late as USA registered consecutive wins at a World Cup for the first time since 1930.
Paraguay 1-0 Turkey
62 shots, no goals. This stat sums up Turkey’s dismal World Cup campaign as they went out of the tournament with a defeat to Paraguay. Their first World Cup appearance in over 20 years had come with much hope with players like Arda Guler and Kenan Yıldız in their ranks. But after a shock defeat to Australia in the opening game, they fell to another defeat.
Paraguay went ahead after just 65 seconds after Matias Galarza found the bottom corner of the goal from outside the box. Turkey then attacked and attacked more as Mert Muldur nearly brought them level, but his header hit the crossbar 10 minutes before half-time. The Crescent Stars received a boost after Miguel Almiron became the first player to be sent off for covering his mouth following a VAR check.
In the second half, just as they did in the game against Australia, Turkey laid siege to La Albirroja’s goal. But just as it happened in the opening game, they failed to find that elusive goal. Deniz Gul went close a couple of times and they piled up the pressure in the closing stages but were left frustrated. They had 32 shots here but only five on target. With two defeats in two games, Vincenzo Montella’s side crashes out of the World Cup, while Paraguay will now believe they can progress.
Morocco 1-0 Scotland
Many Scotland fans were still settling into their seats when Ismael Saibari’s stunning strike put 2022 World Cup semi-finalists Morocco ahead in Boston inside 70 seconds.
Saibari latched onto a ball from Brahim Diaz, leaving the Scottish defence playing catch up, before finishing past a stunned Angus Gunn. The Atlas Lions continued to create chances and were unlucky not to double their lead after a sustained spell of pressure. Gunn denied Achraf Hakimi and Bilal El Khannouss shot over the crossbar with Scotland unable to lay a glove on their opponents.
However, Steve Clarke’s men had a good chance of scoring at the end of the half, but John McGinn volleyed Andy Robertson’s cross well over the goal. The start of the second half saw Morocco once again in control with Saibari’s shot clipping the crossbar and Gunn thwarting El Khannouss.
With the Tartan Army growing restless in the stands, their team began to show more endeavor. The introduction of Ben Gannon-Doak helped them become more of a threat on the right side as they searched for an equalizer. Scotland appeared in more control of the game as time went on but failed to net a goal that would have almost secured their place in the next round.
The game ended in disappointment for the Scots, with Morocco continuing their impressive run after drawing with Brazil in the opening game. The African side will play Haiti next on June 25, and Scotland will take on Brazil on the same date.
Brazil 3-0 Haiti
Brazil registered their first win of the 2026 World Cup with an impressive display against Haiti in their second game. The five-time champions had struggled to be at their fluid best against Morocoo in the opening game but had little trouble dealing with their opponents this time.
Matheus Cunha brought more attacking threat to the team after starting ahead of Igor Thiago and put his side ahead in the 26th minute as Haiti defender Hannes Delcroix deflected a clearance off him and into the back of the net. Cunha doubled his side’s lead 13 minutes later after Vinicius Jr. put him through on goal.
Vinicius then turned goal scorer after Lucas Paquetá lobbed the ball over Haiti’s defence, and the Real Madrid forward calmly slotted Brazil’s third.
Haiti did offer more resistance in the second half and nearly had a goal when Ricardo Ade headed from a corner drawing a fine reflex save from Alisson. Brazilian substitute Endrick then saw his goal ruled off for outside as Carlo Ancelotti’s men comfortably won. This was a much improved performance from the Seleção, but they will still have work to do when they face Scotland in the Group C clash on June 25 in Florida.
