FIFA World Cup 2026 results roundup Day 3: Brazil held as Scotland and Australia win
World Cup 2026 results: The third day of FIFA World Cup 2026 saw four games across three groups. Qatar played Switzerland in Group B while two Group C matches saw Brazil take on Morocco and Scotland play Haiti. In Group D, Australia and Turkiye kicked off proceedings.
Brazil 1-1 Morocco
A packed MetLife Stadium saw five-time World Cup champions Brazil take the field against last tournament’s semi finalists Morocco. The North African nation started on the front foot and troubled Carlo Ancelotti’s side for most of the time. Their were rewarded for their efforts when Ismael Saibari lobbed onrushing Alisson Becker to put his side ahead.
Morocco continued to get the better of their more illustrious opponents as the Seleção looked lethargic. But Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr. cut in from the left side and lashed in a strike to bring his team level with 32 minutes on the clock.
As the game went on, Brazil did have chances to score another goal with Lucas Paqueta and Rapinha going close. In the end, both teams started their World Cup journey with a draw. While Morocco will hope to build on from here, questions remain over the quality of the Brazilian team as they struggled to impose themselves.
Next, Brazil face Haiti on 20 June after Morocco take on Scotland on June 19.
Haiti 0-1 Scotland
A first half John McGinn goal proved to be enough as Scotland ended a 36-year wait for a World Cup win. A large Scottish support at the Boston Stadium saw their side start with plenty of intent but lacked quality. Haiti, making their first World Cup appearance since 1974, looked well-equipped and remained a threat in the early exhcanges.
But after being frustrated by their opponents, John McGinn’s left foot strike from inside the box washed away a painful wait. The Tartan Army had n’t been at the World Cup since France 1998 and and the Aston Villa midfielder’s goal sent them into raptures.
While they expected their side to kick on, Scotland struggled to get a grip on the game. Ben Gannon-Doak was their biggest threat from the right side, but Haiti made things uncomfortable for the Scots. They went close to getting a leveller and it required some luck and stout defending to keep the Caribbean at bay as Scotland went top of the group.
The Scots will have to improve by a good margin when they face Morocco on June 19 while Haiti take on Brazil on June 20.
Qatar 1-1 Switzerland
Qatar earned their first-ever World Cup point after rescuing a stoppage time draw against Switzerland. Four years ago, the Middle East nation suffered the agony of having the worst record of a host nation at a World Cup as they lost all three games, scoring only one goal and conceding seven.
But under Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui they looked far more disciplined despite being under the cosh for large parts of the game. The Swiss saw their early dominance rewarded after Breel Embolo put them ahead after a penalty. The European side continued to knock on the door of a second goal but were made to pay for their lack of cutting edge.
Boualem Khoukhi leaped to head home from Homam El Amin’s cross in the 94th minute to salvage an unlikely point for his country. The goal was celebrated wildly by Lopetegui’s men as they made history to banish the memories of 2022. After a point against argubaly the biggest team in the group, Qatar will now fancy their chances of progress.
They will face co-hosts Canada on June 18 while Switzerland take on Bosnia-Herzegovina on the same day.
Australia 2-0 Turkiye
Two sensational goals gave Asutralia a stunning win over Turkiye in their Group D match. Turkiye, making their first World Cup appearance since 2002, looked bright from the start as their players looks ready for the occasion. But 20-year-old Australian winger Nestory Irankunda took a deft touch inside after a pass from Paul Okon-Engstler and fired past Ugurcan Cakir to put the young Socceroos side a ahead in the 27th minute.
In response, The Crescent-Stars piled up the pressure and were unlucky when defender Abdulkerim Bardakci shot from distance drew a sharp save from Patrick Beach and the ball hit the post. The 2002 World Cup semi finalists continued to dominate, having 30 shots on goal but failed find an equalizer.
Australian midfielder Connor Metcalfe then put his side 2-0 ahead with a left foot strike in the 75th minute. The result will boost the confidence of Tony Popovic’s young team as Australia won an opening game at a World Cup for the first time in 20 years.
The Socceroos will take on hosts USA on June 19 and Turkiye and Paraguay will fight for their first points on June 20.
