Scottish League Cup results: St. Mirren win from three goals down, Alloa eliminate Falkirk

Scottish League Cup results: Premiership sides get humbled again as the latest round of the Premier Sports Cup delivered more upsets. With only one more round of matches remaining, things are interesting in the race to reach the last 16.

St. Mirren 4-3 East Kilbride

Defending champions St. Mirren completed a stunning comeback to rescue a win after being three goals down against East Kilbride. The Premiership side didn’t look at their clinical best to start off the match in Paisley.

Roland Idowu curled an effort wide of goal, and Jalmaro Calvin’s pop from distance also went the same way. The missed opportunities came back to bite them, as the League One side took the lead after 32 minutes. Sean Fagan was brought down in the box by Samuel Ramos, and Cameron Elliott made it 1-0 from the resulting penalty.

Seven minutes later, Elliott doubled his side’s advantage. Finlay Gray’s shot from the edge of the box was deflected in by Elliott. Craig McLeish made changes to his team at halftime, but it was The Kilby who extended their lead. They were awarded another penalty after Richard King tugged at Gray in the box. This time Craig McGuffie slotted home in the 57th minute. But then The Buddies started a remarkable turnaround.

Summer signing Eseosa Sule, who had looked impressive since coming on, dispatched a penalty at the hour mark after he was fouled in the box. Nine minutes later, the Premiership side reduced the deficit further. A low cross from Malik Dijksteel caused chaos, and the ball was cleared only to Ryan Carr, who bundled it home.

St. Mirren pushed forward in search of an equalizer and had it in the 77th minute. A long ball from Jacob Chapman was taken on by Killian Phillips, and he produced a sublime chip over onrushing EK goalkeeper Shay Kelly to make it 3-3.

With the game appearing to be headed for a penalty shootout, there was still time for more drama in stoppage time. Sule received the ball on the left side, and he played in Dijksteel, who rolled in a low finish to give The Buddies all three points in a thrilling game.

Alloa Athletic 1-1 Falkirk (Alloa win 4-2 on penalties)

Premiership side Falkirk are eliminated from the Premier Sports Cup after suffering another defeat to lower league opposition. John McGlynn’s side needed a win to have any chance of progress to the last 16 but put in an uninspired performance at Recreation Park.

The Bairns were far from convincing but went ahead in the 39th minute after Scott Tanser finished off a neat move. He lobbed a finish past Ross Stewart after being played in by Brad Spencer. After the interval, they decided to sit back and struggled to create chances to secure their position. Encouraged by this, Alloa came forward, and the Wasps stung their opponents in the 65th minute.

16-year-old Kyle Glasgow, on loan from Rangers, fired in a left-foot shot from the edge of the box to bring the Championship side level. The score stayed this way, as the game went to penalties.

With the shootout poised at 3-2, Ryan Strain saw his effort saved by Stewart, and David Devine’s right-footed effort put Andy Graham’s team on the brink. Liam Henderson, who missed a penalty in last season’s Scottish Cup semi-final, was denied by Stewart to help Alloa to pick up two points.

For Falkirk, their next game against Stranraer is now a dead rubber. After a 5-0 win at Edinburgh City, they lost at home to Ayr United on July 16. Now, this defeat to another Championship side means McGlynn has his work cut-out before next week’s Premiership opener against St. Mirren.
