Scottish League Cup results: Linlithgow shock Greenock Morton, St Mirren start defence in style

Scottish League Cup results: While football fans are glued to the happenings of a fascinating FIFA World Cup, Scottish football is already kicking into gear for the upcoming season. After the national team’s disappointing campaign in the World Cup, the attention now turns to domestic competitions.

The top four leagues across the country will kick off on August 1, but for now, the new Scottish League Cup season is already underway. 40 teams are divided into eight groups, with the group leaders and the three best runners-up progressing to the last 16. The first round of games on July 11 saw a few upsets and some top-tier Scottish teams laying down an early marker.

Greenock Morton 0-1 Linlithgow Rose

Linlithgow Rose celebrated a famous away win as they shocked Scottish Championship side 1-0 at Cappielow. Linlithgow became Lowland League champions last season, but were denied a chance to compete for promotion to League Two because they did not obtain the required SFA bronze licence.

Here in the game against a second-tier side, they showed that they deserved to compete in the Scottish league system. Linlithgow started the Group F game on the front foot, with Dylan Paterson testing Brian Kinnear. Calum Rae then saw his shot go just past the target as the visitors grew in confidence.

Kinnear did well to keep out Cameron Thomson’s effort as half-time approached. Ian Murray made changes to his side for the second half, but it was the Lowland League side that made the breakthrough. Rae collected Paterson’s long ball over the top and rounded Kinnear to put his side ahead in the 58th minute.

Thomson nearly doubled their lead but saw his long-range shot hit the upright. Rose continued to threaten another goal, and in the end, they didn’t need the insurance as Morton failed to get going. The Tons were booed off the pitch by their fans after a disappointing showing in the first competitive game of the season.

Dumbarton 0-4 St Mirren

St Mirren began the defence of their Premier Sports Cup with a 4-0 thrashing of League Two side Dumbarton. The game at The Rock saw the top-flight side take just seven minutes to go ahead.

Samuel Ramos came up with a near-post finish after being played in by Marcus Fraser to start the proceedings. Debutant Chris Mochrie stole possession from The Sons’ trialist goalkeeper to double their advantage in the 39th minute.

Ramos scored his second goal after Jalmaro Calvin’s cross was parried into his path in the 73rd minute. With 13 minutes left on the clock, Thomas Falconer rounded off the win with a delightful chip to give Craig McLeish a perfect start to the new season. The Buddies are now top of Group C and will hope to go further in the defence of the Cup.
