FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 results: Indonesia score two stoppage time goals to pip Malaysia for final spot

FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 results: Indonesia scored two stoppage-time goals against Bangladesh to reach the FIFA ASEAN Cup final in dramatic circumstances. Heading into the game in Jakarta, Garuda needed to better Malaysia’s result against Singapore in order to make the final.

The tension was palpable with both games kicking off at the same time, and it was Indonesia who started on the front foot against their opponents. They went ahead in the 11th minute when Ole Romeny played a cutback on the right side for Mitchell Baker to place a shot beyond Bangladesh goalkeeper Mehedi Srabon.

Baker then doubled his side’s lead in the 20th minute after Romeny, this time marauding from the left side, drew a sharp save from Srabon, leading to a scramble. Baker then placed the ball in the net with a backheel. In Bandung, Malaysia also made a fast start against Singapore.

Forward Bergson da Silva converted a spot kick in the eighth minute to open the scoring. Manuel Hidalgo dribbled through the Singapore defence before setting up Stuart Wilkin, who found the back of the net. But Indonesia were back in ascendancy by the half-time whistle.

Romeny was once again at the centre and helped find space on the right side. The cross was deflected into the path of Rizky Ridho, who drove a finish in the 32nd minute. However, the hosts were stung four minutes later when the Bengal Tigers found a goal back. Shuki Itofusa found himself in space on the right side and played a cross, which found Shahriar Emon, who made no mistake from a header to make it 3-1.

But a late flurry stretched Indonesia’s advantage. Romeny crossed the ball for Baker to tap in and complete his hat-trick. Justin Hubner then lobbed the ball for Baker to head home in the 42nd minute. In stoppage time, they found another goal with Hubner scoring from a Calvin Verdonk corner. At halftime, Indonesia were 6-1 up and heading to the final.

Malaysia take control against Singapore

With a place in the final slipping from their grasp, Malaysia stepped up their game in the second half. In the 62nd minute, Arif Aiman played a low cross which was slotted home by Bergson da Silva to make it 3-0.

Harimau Malaya kept up the pressure and scored a fourth in the 76th minute. Aiman was the provider once again, playing in substitute Paulo Josue, who thumped a finish into the roof of the net. With three minutes of normal time left, Malaysia extended their advantage further.

A neat move sent Syahir Bashah through on goal, and the midfielder found the goal with a well-drilled low finish past Izwan Mahbud. With Indonesia unable to add to their 6-1 advantage, Malaysia were ahead at this stage. Bergson put cherry on the top with a fantastic strike from the edge of the box in stoppage time to seal his hat-trick and a 6-0 win for his team.

But drama would unfold in Jakarta.

Indonesia snatch final spot at the death

Bergson’s stoppage-time goal in Bandung meant Indonesia needed at least two more goals without reply to progress. With the clock ticking towards the 90th minute, they did get one goal.

That man, Ole Romeny, sent a ball fizzing across the Bangladesh goal and Luke Vickery’s left-foot strike gave them hope. However, they were dealt a blow just at the start of stoppage time. Rakib Hossain played a cross from the right side, and Farhaan Ali Wahid volleyed from close range to make it 7-2. Indonesia were now tasked with scoring twice in stoppage time.

Initially, the stoppage time was announced for two minutes just as Bangladesh scored their second goal. Indonesian coach John Herdman and several of his players protested this allotted time, and the officials revised it to seven minutes, admitting a miscalculation.

Still, time appeared to be slipping away for Garuda, who scored in the sixth minute of the added time. A free-kick saw Borussia Monchengladbach defender Kevin Diks score from a header to raise hopes of a dramatic comeback.

In the dying seconds of the match, Romeny, fittingly, charged down the left side and wiggled his way into the box before his cross was poked home by Mitchell Baker to spark wild scenes among their fans and players.

The 9-2 scoreline meant Indonesia pipped Malaysia to the ASEAN Cup final spot on goals scored. Both teams finished level on points and had the same goal difference, with Garuda scoring 11 goals in their three games to Malaysia’s nine to reach the final. They will now play Thailand for the trophy on Monday, October 5.
