Scottish League Cup results: Dundee United bounce back, Kilmarnock win late at Elgin City
Scottish League Cup results: After upsets last time out, Premiership sides recorded routine wins in the third round of the Premier Sports Cup. With only two more rounds to go, every game is becoming important. The matches on July 19 saw some teams get back on track while others took a massive step towards qualification for the last 16.
Dundee United 3-0 Arbroath
Dundee United bounced back from their shocking loss to Montrose to comfortably beat Arbroath in their Group B match. Jim Goodwin had been under pressure to deliver after their opening two games left a lot of fans unconvinced.
The Premiership saw more of the ball early on and went ahead when Zac Sapsford curled a finish past Aidan McAdams after being played through by Idjessi Metsoko. The goal came in the 37th minute and set the tone for the rest of the game.
Sapsford went close to doubling his side’s lead after the interval. His shot took a deflection off McAdams and appeared set to go over the line before Metsoko arrived on the scene to bundle it home in the 54th minute. The Tangerines looked much better in the second half and had their third goal in the 68th minute.
Lachlan Rose slotted a finish to help the Tannadice outfit make it two wins out of three in the League Cup. They now sit second in Group B and play The Spartans on Tuesday next.
Elgin City 0-1 Kilmarnock
Kilmarnock kept their hopes alive of progress from an increasingly tight H after a hard-fought win over Elgin City. The League Two side appeared more than capable of frustrating the Premiership side, and they were encouraged to get a result in the 37th minute.
Killie’s Jamie Brandon was sent-off for a foul on Lyall Booth in the 37th minute as troubles mounted for Neil McCann’s side. They had only scrapped past Raith Rovers on penalties in their opening game and looked out of sorts at Borough Briggs.
It appeared that Kilmarnock were heading for yet another goalless draw, but forward Joe Hugill came up with a late winner. He ran up the left-hand side and slotted a finish past Tom Ritchie in the third minute of stoppage time to secure the three points. They now sit third in the table and have two more games to go.
Kimarnock host Hamilton next before travelling to Balmoor Stadium to face another League One side, Peterhead
