Canada vs. South Africa: Co-host Canada progressed to the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a dramatic stoppage-time win over South Africa in California.
Les Rouges, impressive in the group stages, started the game on the front foot with Derek Cornelius unable to make strong contact with his head after a deep free-kick by Stephen Eustaquio. Canada continued to probe in the first half as South Africa survived a goalmouth scramble with Aubrey Modiba making a goal-line clearance to keep the scoresheet blank.
In the second half, the World Cup co-hosts continued to have the upper hand, and Ronwen Williams made a big save to deny Tani Oluwaseyihjn after Jesse Marsch’s side felt they were denied a penalty. South Africa had their struggles in attack, registering just one shot on target, but were resolute defensively.
Following the introduction of Alphonso Davies in the 75th minute, Canada pushed in search of a winner as Bafana Bafana kept frustrating them with some heroic rearguard action. But just when the match looked destined for extra time, Eustaquio sent Canadian fans into dreamland.
A cross from the right side was headed away by Ime Okon, and the ball fell to Eustaquio on the edge of the box. The Los Angeles FC midfielder took the ball on his chest and then fired low into the bottom-left corner to finally beat Williams and give Canada a historic win.
The Word: Marsch-ing On
“You are Canadian heroes. The future of the sport in this country is huge because of you”. These were Canada head coach Jesse Marsch’s words as he gathered his players in a huddle after the full-time whistle. Being from USA and having been on the country’s coaching staff, taking the Canada job was not an easy task.
It can be argued that some Canadian fans remain unconvinced by him, but what is not up for debate is that job he has done at this World Cup. An opening game draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina gave Canada its first-ever World Cup point, and they followed it up by thumping Qatar 6-0 in their second match.
A 2-1 defeat to Switzerland in the final group game wasn’t ideal, but by then they had secured progress to the knockout round for the first time in their history. Now, a win in the knockout game against South Africa has made it a memorable run already for the co-hosts.
Marsch has modelled a side that plays without fear and can trouble teams with their frenetic attacking style. For all his criticisms, the former Leeds United manager has delivered on the biggest stage, and that will only enhance his and his team’s reputation.
After playing all their group games in Canada, Marsch and his men have a win on US soil, and they will be more than a match in the last 16.
