Gulf Cup 2026 final: Quick-fire goals power Saudi Arabia to fourth title at UAE’s expense

Gulf Cup 2026 final: Two goals in the space of three minutes in the first half proved enough for Saudi Arabia to lift the Gulf Cup title on home soil. The win also marks the nation’s first major title since 2004.

Before the kickoff, the home fans had turned the Al-Inma Stadium into a cauldron of noise, colour, and lights. Both sets of fans made sure they did their part in making the final a spectacle. It didn’t take long for the players to turn things up a notch.

A frenetic start saw UAE’s Nicolas Gimenez attempt a spectacular bicycle kick in the third minute, but he was off target. UAE appeared more settled than their opponents, but it was the home side who took the lead.

A corner from Saleh Abu Al-Shamat was only partially cleared by the Emirati defence and the ball fell to Hammam Al-Hammami. The Al Shabab midfielder saw his shot from outside the box take a deflection off Bruno and left goalkeeper Khalid Eissa wrong-footed to give Saudi Arabia the lead.

The decibel levels inside the stadium went up as the home fans celebrated, and they might still have been bouncing when The Green Falcons came flying again. A through ball by left-back Moteb Al-Harbi released Al-Hammami on the left side. He cut inside the box before playing the ball to Nasser Al-Dawsari. The Al-Hilal player threaded in a perfect ball for Firas-Al-Buraikan, who found the bottom left corner to double his side’s advantage in the 14th minute.

The second goal sparked wilder celebrations in the stands, with flares set off. Saudi almost scored a third goal two minutes later. A counter-attack saw right-back Mohammed Abu Al Shamat split open the Al Abyad defence, sending his brother, Saleh, through on goal. Saleh sent the defender the wrong way and chipped the ball past the onrushing Eissa, only to see his effort clip the left side of the post.

The rattled UAE side composed themselves and grew into the game. The Saudi defence lost the ball in a dangerous area, and Mamadou Coulibaly played Gimenez through on goal with a precise ball. However, the striker’s shot came off the post. Then came a contentious moment in the 38th minute.

UAE built a patient move, and Bruno’s nimble footwork saw Hassan Al-Tambakti bring him down in the box, and a penalty was awarded. Gimenez was ready to take the spot kick before the referee decided to take it upstairs. A lengthy VAR check followed, and the penalty call was overturned with the video assistant referee deeming that there wasn’t enough contact for a spot kick to be given.

Croatian coach Zlatko Dalic made changes to the UAE team for the second half and substitute Sultan Adil nearly pulled back a goal. Winger Guilherme Bala released him on the left side, but Adil saw his shot saved by Mohammed Al-Owais. The home side then had a couple of chances to put the gloss on an excellent performance.

Firas controlled a long ball before playing forward Mohamed Kano through on goal, but his effort was kept out by Eissa. Then a corner in the 83rd minute saw centre-back Abdulelah Al-Amri attempt a bicycle kick, but his shot went over the bar. UAE did have the chance to make the closing moments of the game uneasy for the home contingent.

Luazinho was played into the box on the left side and he relayed a pass to Fabio Lima, who unleashed a fierce left-footed strike that struck the crossbar. The ball fell to Ruben Canedo, and he delivered a cross for Lima, but this time his attempt was gathered by Al-Owais from close range.

There was more chaos to come in stoppage time after the linesman raised a flag for handball by Sultan Adil. The UAE bench came up to confront the linesman, and Moroccan referee Jalal Jayed showed a red card to Khaled Ibrahim, who was an unused substitute.

This remained the final notable action of the match as Saudi Arabia soon celebrated their fourth Gulf Cup title and their first in 22 years.

Curva Analysis

The Gulf Cup win marks a remarkable turnaround for Saudi Arabia under Georgios Donis. The Greek coach had come under fire for their tepid FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign. The team, which had shocked the world four years ago with a historic upset win over Argentina, went out with a whimper this time.

They managed to pick up just two points from their three group games, drawing against Uruguay and World Cup debutants Cape Verde, to finish at the bottom of their group.

Coming into the Gulf Cup, Donis knew that playing on home soil, anything less than an appearance in the final would put his job in serious jeopardy. Not only did they reach the final, but they also delivered a scintillating performance to end the nation’s long wait for a major title.

Long considered a heavyweight of Asian football, Saudi Arabia have often underperformed on the tournament stage.

This win has come in the nick of time, with the country geared to host the Asian Cup 2027 in January. The quality of opposition in that competition will be much higher, but Saudi fans will now believe their team can come close to a first continental title since 1996.
